SENIOR CONSULTANTS

Paul Mason

Can you tell us briefly what you do at Power Train?

As a Senior Consultant my role is to manage the delivery team and be the link man on-site between the client and Power Train. I also often have an input to the design of an event.

What attracted you to work for Power Train?

Two things. Firstly, the opportunity to deliver training that is creative and engaging and less run-of-the-mill than more traditional training events. Secondly, the opportunity to work for a company whose focus is on training people to be able to do things rather than teaching people about things. There’s a big difference between knowing about something and being able to do it, and Power Train is very much focussed on the latter.

What is your most memorable Power Train moment?

There are so many, but I think the one that sticks most in my mind is the delegate who worked for a rail company who announced in the morning that he didn’t want to be there, that the event wasn’t relevant to him, and that he was leaving at 3pm to collect his daughter. He then told me at 4pm that he was really sorry, he was really enjoying the event, thought it was really useful but really had to go to get his daughter now, or his wife would be less than amused! It’s that kind of turnaround that makes it worthwhile.

What are your favourite past times/hobbies?

Aside of the obvious spending time with the family and holidays, I love music of most types with a particular penchant for 1970’s Progressive Rock, 1950’s Jazz, Orchestral Classical Music and Opera – particularly Wagner’s epics. I’d be happy to let you listen to my collection if you would like! I also love to read and quite enjoy a potter in the garden.

What’s the best thing, and the worst thing, about working for Power Train?

I can’t pick one best thing; there are many – obviously, the fabulous people who work there and the wonderful directors, the opportunity to work with a wide range of clients from a huge variety of different businesses and meeting some great people on the events that we run. The other particularly rewarding thing is the feedback that we get from delegates, who tell us how well we understand their business and how totally real everything is that we do. As for the worst thing – I guess it’s that occasional regret that goes with my role of not being able to see things through from the very beginning to the very end.
